Always One Step Ahead
Minister of Health in the Serbian Government Tomica Milosavljević supported the project of using hydro-geo-thermal energy for heating in the Mladenovac ”Selters” Spa. Instead of delivering 20 tons of oil fuel thirteen times a year, water with a temperature of 50 degrees Celsius will be used

Minister of Health in the Serbian Government Tomica Milosavljević visited the wells of hydro-geo-thermal water in the ”Selters” Rehabilitation Center in Mladenovac at the end of August, which ”Beogradske elektrane” will use starting with the upcoming heating season for providing thermal energy for the whole spa complex.
Based on the business and technical cooperation agreement on using hydro-geo-thermal energy signed on August 20, 2008, ”Beogradske elektrane” and the Rehabilitation Institute – Beograd, which manages the ”Selters” spa center, will be the first in Serbia to use a renewable source of energy for massive heating. Starting with the upcoming heating season, instead of burning enormous quantities of fossil fuel (oil fuel), about 30.000 square meters of the ”Selters” spa center will be heated by using hydro-geo-thermal energy.
– Instead of delivering 20 tons of oil fuel to the Spa 13 times a year for heating the complex, based on the modified design of the local furnace, water with a temperature higher than 50 degrees Celsius will be used. We will use what nature has given us and thereby reduce the emission of sulphur-dioxide on the territory of the Belgrade municipality of Mladenovac – said Minister Milosavljević.
He emphasized that ”Beogradske elektrane” has a visionary role in using renewable sources of energy and underlined that the partnership between ”Beogradske elektrane”, the Ministry of Health and Rehabilitation Institute – Beograd will enable life in accordance with nature, as well as beginning the use of renewable sources of energy in the best possible way.
– I expect understanding and support from the Belgrade mayor and from the City Assembly because such projects are a true challenge and best example how the environment can be preserved and how business activities can be promoted if there is a clear vision, good idea and if forces are joined – emphasized Minister Tomica Milosavljević.
Vladan Marković, general manager of ”Beogradske elektrane”, explained that the company commenced several important development projects and that the use of hydro-geo-thermal energy in ”Selters” Spa is only one of them. A similar project will also be realized in the Ljig Spa, while negotiations between ”Beogradske elektrane” and Mataruška Spa are in progress.

– Apart from heating, supplying expandable warm water and warming pools will also be possible in ”Selters”. From the economic point of view, this project is very profitable. Besides, it does not imply chemical modification of water, only its warming capacities are utilized and therefore it maintains its therapeutic effect – explained Marković
Stanka Vidaković, director of the Rehabilitation Institute, emphasized that, due to this project, the ”Selters” Spa moved closer towards the norms and rules of business in the developed world.
Among the laureates in Rome: General Manager of “Beogradske elektrane” at the reception in Otherways International Management and Consulting, July 7, 2008”Beogradske elektrane” took over the handling and maintenance of the local furnace in the ”Selters” rehabilitation center with a power of 3 megawatts. In accordance with the agreement, the reconstruction of the furnace is in progress, along with the installation of the most up to date equipment, which will enable the exploitation of the existing geothermal well and ecologically clean supply of thermal energy for objects within the ”Selters” Spa. The agreement also predicts that ”Beogradske elektrane”, in cooperation with the Institute, request from the competent institutions to be given the status of a privileged producer of thermal energy by using renewable resources. More precisely, in accordance with Article 141 of the Law on energy, privileged producers of thermal energy have the right to subventions, tax, customs and other benefits. Realizing this right will enable ”Beogradske elektrane” to offer the Institute an even more favorable price of thermal energy.
In cooperation with the Mining and Geology Faculty scientific team, ”Beogradske elektrane” performed necessary investigations during the previous two months, and will realize the whole project.
Having the foundations of its business policy for several years on the principle of sustainable development, this company continues taking large steps towards increasing energy efficiency, as well as studying and applying renewable resources in the thermal energy production process. On such basis, starting with October 15, 2008, ”Beogradske elektrane” will burn biomass, i.e. wood products (pellets and briquettes) in its furnaces in which they have used solid (fossil) fuel in the past. By burning biomass instead of 8.000 tons of coal per heating season, the pollution of the environment will be additionally decreased in Belgrade.

Platinum Award in Rome
The international association for the promotion of successful small and middle enterprises from the whole world – Otherways International Management and Consulting – awarded ”Beogradske elektrane” on July 7, 2008 in Rome with a Platinum Award for promoting technology, improving the quality of services and best name in the profession for 2008. The reason for awarding the prestigious honors was celebrating ten years of this association’s presence.
Before the Roman diplomatic bodies, the president of Otherways International-a Charbel Tabet handed the general manager of ”Beogradske elektrane” Vladan Marković ”The Platinum Statue”, plaque and platinum badge for managerial abilities. Tabet emphasized that the Otherways association monitors, qualifies and ranks the work of more than 5.000 small and middle enterprises from Europe, Asia and Africa.
