The Heart of Serbia
THROUGH KOSOVO, LENGTHWISE AND CROSSWISE (1)
Awaiting the Great Wait
”It is not our first time, my son. They will do their thing, it is up to us to do ours. Another Serbian Great Wait is awaiting us. Last time we waited for almost four centuries, but it came. Then, we used to be a nation that knows how to wait. Now everything became faster and more confusing, the Great Wait will be ten or a hundred times shorter. However, are we still a nation that has the wisdom and strength for the Great Wait? Everything, my son, now depends on that. Everything.”

MEDIEVAL FORTIFIED TOWNS: NOVO BRDO, IN THE NORTH OF KOSOVO
The Eternal Gleam of the Silver Town
This fascinating town was first mentioned in the time of King Milutin (1281-1321) and it got its real glow during the reign of Stefan Dečanski (1321-1331). Many songs, many real fairy tales, and many legal codes were inspired by this town. It was said that ”the voice about its impregnable character goes all the way to God’s ears”. During the Despotate (15th century), it settled 20 per cent of the total European market of silver and gold, and along with Srebrenica, also belonging to the Despot, even 35 per cent of the market. Its golden churches, courts of princes and bishops, palaces, streets and squares, mosaics and golden crosses, its four meters thick ramparts and fifteen meters tall towers are ruins and dust today, inaccessible even for scientific studies.

Friends
GRIGORI STEPANOVICH SHCHERBIN (1868-193), RUSSIAN CONSUL IN KOSOVSKA MITROVICA
A Victim of Noble Sentiments
He entered the diplomatic service of Imperial Russia when he was only 23, and was one of its most promising people. He spoke Turkish, Arabic, Albanian, Armenian, Bulgarian and Serbian extraordinarily well. After gaining diplomatic experience in Constantinople, Skopje, Cetinje and Skadar, in 1902 he was appointed Consul in Mitrovica. His purpose and the purpose of the newly established Consulate: to prevent pogroms and save the Serbian population from the Albanian tyranny. He was welcomed as a savior, which he did turn out to be. What he had come for, he did ”too well”. He died of wounds inflicted by an Albanian traitorous attack, from the back, and that ”drop of Russian blood in the sea of Serbian blood in Kosovo” is, as we can see, still alive

SHIELDS AND ILLUMINATIONS: DID THE SERBS REALLY FORGET THE SECRET OF TRUE FRIENDSHIP?
Faithfulness is the Supreme Virtue
Erasmus claimed that ”a friend is more necessary than either fire or water”. The mighty Napoleon, after his defeat, abandoned by all, understood that ”a faithful friend is the true image of divinity”. The Jews, that ancient much suffering but vital nation, inscribe with golden letters into their eternal memory the ones that helped and trusted them in the hardest temptations, so their offspring would also remember them for the good they had done. In the evil years which remain behind us, often making great personal sacrifices, many splendid spirits and noble people offered their help and support to the Serbs. Let us not forget: we still haven’t repaid them

Paths
UVAC, THE RIVER BEFORE ONE REMAINS BREATHLESS
The Beauty of the River Labyrinth
The twisting stream of this unusual river, after which it was named, is 119 kilometers long, although the air distance from the spring to its confluence is three times shorter. There are as much as three lakes made on this unique river, which is only one of the numerous attractions of this mountain area

Paths of wine
THE WINESHOPS OF NEGOTIN IN THE AUTUMN THAT HAS JUST PASSED
The days pass and the wine flows
In authentic settlements of vinters and vineyards, like in the villages Rogljevo, Rajac, Smedovac, on the road to Zaječar from Negotin, people have lived from and for wine since the ancient times. Houses are divided on those for wine and for people, on houses for people and on those for hosts and the servants in wine making. They never received guests until the modern phenomenon of tourism occured. But, the wine united them all

Mark
THE CHAPEL OF PEACE IN SREMSKI KARLOVCI, ONE OF THE MOST UNUSUAL MONUMENTS IN THE EUROPEAN HISTORY OF WAR AND PEACE
The Diplomats of the Round Table
There, on that hill above the town of Sremski Karlovci, used to be a log cabin where, after seventy-two days long negotiations, from November 14, 1698 to January 26, 1699, the sixteen years long ”Vienna War” ended, between the Christian coalition led by Austria, and Turkey. This marked the end of the Turkish imperial presence in Central Europe. ”Today, we can no longer enter the wooden council hall from 1699, but we can enter peace and peace can enter us”

Roadside Monuments
TOMBSTONES FOR THE FALLEN IN FARAWAY PLACES
The Secret of the Stone Smile

Do not fear them. Stop and look at them. Try to see through that stylized stone smile, barely visible. Think about the man and event the stone warns about. Think about life, death, transience, fate. That would be sufficient. Perhaps that is the only reason the roadside monuments exist. And you, have a safe trip, and may guardian angels follow you on it!

Crowns
SERBIA — THE HOMELAND OF ROMAN EMPERORS: MAXIMIANUS HERCULIUS (285-305; 310)
Wild Hercules
They had similar origin, glorious military careers and they were united by the present glory of the Iliricum Army which they both, by birth and by service, belonged to. It was noticed that they even celebrated birthdays on the same day. This is where, however, all the similarities between Diocletian and Maximilian stop, and where begins the thing by which we shall differ them forever

Famous loves
KING DRAGUTIN NEMANJIĆ AND QUEEN KATALINA
The Royal Head and the Crown on it
He thought that he had no interest in women but only a good marriage. A strategy. A wise political act. An ally. Not the wife but the father-in-law. Then, suddenly, he saw who she really was, oh Lord, what a woman! His wife! But he should not have listened to her. Not at all. He wanted to be a king. Yes, a king. Should he defeat his father-in-law with the help of his father?! And the fall from a horse, near Jeleč, was not an accident but enlightenment. A sign. Giving his brother the royal insignia meant giving him the pain.

History and legend
STOJAN ČUPIĆ, FAMOUS AS ZMAJ OF NOĆAJA (THE DRAGON OF NOĆAJ), THE MAN WHO LIVED AND DIED AS A HERO
The Winged Guard of the Border on the River Drina
Surep claims that he was ”a great hero, a boaster, a merry fellow and a grouch, brave and fearless, full of joy and optimism”. Poetic chronicles of the First Serbian Uprising say that ”he was made of fire and song”. Today, we can experience him through the eyes of the blind folksong singer Filip Višnjić, his companion and fellow sufferer

People and time
MIŠA ANASTASIJEVIĆ (1803-1885), THE GREAT MERCHANT AND THE FAMOUS BENEFACTOR
The toys of the Danube captain
He was one of the richest Serbs at the time. For some time he dealt in salt and he had eight times bigger property from the former state budget of Serbia. He even lent money to Prince Miloš, from whose revenge he will escape from Serbia forever, some time later. He did not succeed in politics or male children but his merchant fleet had 74 ships, and his business empire employed over 10 thousand people in the middle of the 19th century! Today, in his beautiful endowment stands the Rector’s Office of the greatest Serbian university, but Miša Anastasijević is resting out of Serbia for 122 years, forgotten from ”his fatherland”. Forever?

Trails
BRANKO RADIČEVIĆ IN BELGRADE, IN TUMULTUOUS TIMES
Laughter filled with energy
Today, the famous poet of Serbian Romanticism has a street, a square, a bridge, a school, a library, and many monuments. In the middle of the 19th century, during the revolutionary agitations around Europe, his crossing to the right bank of the Sava River and his ”sizzling voice” were not favorite to the stirred up authorities.

Lighthouses
SAINT PETAR ZIMONJIĆ (1866-1941), METROPOLITAN OF DABAR AND BOSNIA
Dedication through Temptations
He hasn’t been given peaceful and blissful times, but he had everything a true Christ’s soldier needs in times completely different from the wished ones. Because of his nobleness and goodness, he has indeed been beloved, which executioners rarely forgive. It remains unknown whether he ended his life in Jadovno, Jasenovac or Zagreb, but it is known that he suffered for the sake of the Godman

Heritage
SERBIAN CULTURAL HERITAGE IN THE REPRESENTATIVE WORLD TREASURE MAP
All the Visits of Mnemosyne’s Daughters
Whether the approach is in accordance with the sacral-traditional point of view, or in the spirit of the present globalistic doctrine, the cultural treasure of Serbia is first-class. Leading are the prehistoric cultures of Lepenski Vir and Vinča, the ancient Roman imperial heritage, the golden middle-ages of the baptized Serbia, and the grand open museum of extraordinary natural beauties

SERBIAN WORLD MUSIC: THE BAND ”HAZARI” WITH YOU FOR THE PAST SEVENTEEN YEARS

The Music Universe of the Balkans
Deep and mysterious, pervaded with interlaced motifs of Serbian, Shopian, Makam music, cast of the classic, refined Byzantine, pre-Christian, ambiance and hypercivilizational sound, marked with the Balkan poetics and authentic sensibility – the music of ”Hazari” left a deep impression everywhere and captured the audience. It was and remained something completely different

Ars sacra
PETAR BILIĆ, CONTEMPORARY MASTER OF ICONS AND FRESCOES
Blessing is given, but prudence is learned
”The easiest thing is to learn the technology of making an icon. But there is no true icon making without personal inner transformation and blessing. The painter feels if the road before him is the true one. As much as I advanced in faith, more I have been closer to that system of values which came from Holy Scriptures, more I had those godsends”

Oration
ABOUT HUMANENESS, HEROISM AND THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MEDAL
The inexorable mirror
In Law School in Belgrade every year there is a competition in rhetoric, creatively continuing the long tradition of eloquence in Serbia. ”National Review” is publishing the text ”Thank you, immortal heroes” which, pronounced on this year’s rhetoric review, brought his author a victory. The text is adjusted for the purpose of publishing in this magazine.

The capital
BELGRADE TOPONYMS: TIME AND SPACE OF A TOWN, STORED IN A LANGUAGE
History Written in Names
The names of Belgrade streets, squares, areas, gates, hills, bridges, coasts, fountains, buildings... they have all been changed many times through epochs and languages. Behind all these names there is a story. All these stories, their heroes, their narrators and their readers (listeners) make part of a unique, colossal, story called Belgrade. Maybe Belgrade is nothing else but a story. Together, in a few editions of the ”National Review”, we shall go through this story

The history of TV
SHORTLY BEFORE THE JUBILEE, HALF A CENTURY OF RADIO TELEVISION BEOGRAD: THE BELGRADE SCHOOL OF COMEDY
Lucid masters of comedy
Just like the ”childhood of film” coincided with the appearance of outrageous comedies of Mack Sennett, so did the ”childhood of television” coincide, in our circles, with the appearance of comedy TV series of Radivoje Lola Đukić. This was the basis for an authentic school of comedy, in collusion with the vital Belgrade spirit and the typical Belgrade view of everyday events

Scary script
VAMPIROLOGY: A REPORT WRITTEN WITH A HAWTHORN STICK
A ”life after death” fever around Europe
Even if some serious writers claim that it was a project of Serbian jokesters who wanted to frighten the Austrians, it is certain that the stating of Vienna newspapers from Serbia, in the summer of 1725, provoked a very serious uproar around the continent. It is also true that the word VAMPIRE (VAMPIR, in Serbian) is the only word which was taken over from Serbian into all world languages and became international. The reporter of the ”National Review”, armed with garlic, a hawthorn stick and a delicate humor, followed these ancient trails
